By 1955, Jaguar was some way to earning its reputation for producing machines of ‘grace, pace and space’. It made some of the most beautiful cars in the world, enjoyed great success on the race track, and produced a large saloon that was selling well in America.
The company then invested one million pounds – an awful lot of money in those days – in designing and manufacturing the Mk II, a new type of compact saloon in which the bodyshell also formed part of the chassis. This type of construction made it suitable for both the road and for racing, which is exactly what it did in the hands of Stirling Moss, among others.
From then on, Jaguar’s saloon cars have always upheld the same sporting tradition. The Mk II became an icon and later benefitted from upgrades including stronger brakes and more powerful engines. In the early Sixties the company produced a special edition in partnership with British tuner John Coombs, which soon became the most coveted of Mk IIs.
It’s this ‘Coombs’ model that guests of the Heritage Driving Experience will try for themselves, alongside a modern, 503bhp XFR that can trace its roots back to the Mk II. After arrival at , you’ll be chauffeured in a modern XF to the driving area before spending 15 minutes behind the wheel of each car.
